Resumo: This research aims at understanding the relationship between the historical knowledge, regarding Tiradentes, and both the historical interpretations and social imaginary expressed by UFMGs 2005 entry exam applicants. The applicants texts were used as empiric dataallowing us to appreciate the significance given to the figure of Tiradentes based on two iconographic works regarding the figure of Tiradentes: Tiradentes esquartejado by Pedro Américo e Alferes Joaquim José da Silva Xavier by José Washt Rodrigues. The analyses were supported both by two theoretical concepts and analytic perspectives such as socialimaginary, representations, appropriation and cultural practices employed by Nova Historia Cultural. As to the methodological standpoint, analytic categories were created regarding the applicants writings. The theoretical-methodological references allowed us to build the theoretical fabric employed to help understand the representations, appropriations and the historical knowledge. It also helped us with reading, analyses and the interpretation of the sources. Regarding the analyses employed, we could infer that both scholastic history and knowledge circulating in other social areas play a crucial role as to the comprehension andinterpretations of the historical knowledge.
