Resumo: The main iron ore processing plants in Brazil operate through reverse cationic flotation. Many studies have been conducted in order to improve flotation efficiency by optimizing the process variables. The pneumatic flotation cell stands out due to the simplicity to operate it and to the intense contact particle-bubble promoted by the pulp feeding system. There are just few studies about the application of this equipment to flotate iron ore. This work aims to present a mathematical model for the pneumatic flotation cell that predicts the effect of operating conditions on the recovery and the mineral grade from studies of mass and transport. The pneumatic flotation model was adapted from traditional flotation models and considers the two flotation zones in the pneumatic flotation cells: the collection and froth zones. Tests to collect information about grade, recovery of different kinds of minerals and operational variables (froth zone, feeding flow, gas holdup etc.) were performed in order to describe the effect of these variables on the grade-recovery relation in the pneumatic flotation cell. The results guide new tests so that operating conditions are adapted with greater chance of success by simplifying the amount of experimental tests that would be required in a conventional approach.
