Resumo: The hand is involved in almost all our daily activities, and for your perfect operation it is necessary that all its anatomical structures are in complete harmony. Currently, there are a large number of patients suffering from hand trauma and the consequences generate incapacity for work and for the activities of daily living, and generate economic implications for society. The self-inflicted injuries of hands against glass surfaces (SIIHAGS) are relevant events in the health and violence and treat the subject rarely addressed both in national and international literature. Therefore, it is aimed, in this study establish the epidemiological and medical surgical cases of SIIHAGS and their individual and collective impacts and propose preventive measures. To do so, they were involved 18 individuals affected by self-inflicted injuries of the hands, caused by punch glass. Subjects were classified by sex, age, injury reason, profession, alcohol, drugs, dominant hand, damaged structures, interval between trauma and surgery, rehabilitation, sequels and time off work. After the descriptive analysis of the results, it was found that the population most affected by self-inflicted by punch in glass injuries are males, young adults, with a mean age of 30.28 years and active in the labor market. The main occupation of the patients involved in the study was distributed among individuals in the construction area. The cause of self-inflicted injuries that stood out were family quarrels, affecting largely the dominant hand. Alcohol consumption was present in 44% of cases. The previous hand and handle compartment was hit the hardest, with significant involvement of flexor tendons and nerves as the median and ulnar. Although most injuries coursing with mild sequelae were identified cases of functional hand impairment such as partial loss of ability to hold objects and limitations of flexion-extension with or without associated sensitivity changes. The labor and school license period that stood out was 31-120 days. This license generated, in addition to hospital costs, medical-surgical and rehabilitation procedures, spending the contractor and social security. Before the study concluded that self inflicted injuries of the hand against the glass surfaces serious injury can be considered peculiar epidemiologic feature profile and have a lesion pattern with a preferential affecting the anterior segment of the handle. They are acts of violence that indirectly influence the economy and essentially the quality of life of the patient. It is suggested to be created means to raise awareness of this type of trauma and violence can permanently change the member function and welfare of those affected, and yet to be realized new studies exploring the many faces of this important modality trauma and violence.
