Resumo: A shistosomiasis control program was developed during the period between 1984/87 in Peri-Peri MG. Trimontly, application of molluscicide (niclosamide) was done in the water collection and the individuals which were eliminating Schistosoma mansoni eggs in the feces (KATO-KATZ method) were treated with oxamniquine yearly. From 1974 to 1984 the control measures were done by the Centro de Pesquisas René Ranchou (CPqRR-FIOCRUZ) satff. During this period, the prevalence of infected people decreased from 43.5 to 15.3%, the anual incidence from 20.3 to 8.2%, the geometric mean of the number of eggs per gram of feces from 281.30 +-4.53 to 49.70 +- 3.00, the hepatosplenic form (HE) cases from 5.6 to 0.0%, the infection in B. globrata snails from 14.3 to 1.50% and, 72.3% of the residents and 50.0% of infected people in the area were examined and treated by the CPqRR satff. In 1984 the measures were included in the local health basic network. Between 1984 and 1987, with the municipalization of the measures, the prevalence turned from 15.2 to 4.4% the incidence from 8.2 to 1.0%, the geometric mean of the number of eggs from 49.70 +- 3.00 to 135.64 +-2.94. The rate of the snails infection by S.mansoni continued aroud 1.5% and about 80.1% of the residents and 100.0% of the infected ones were examined and trated, respectivelly. Based on the results obtained in this area, to iniciate a program on a municipal basis, for schistosomiasis control, is necessary local political decision, technical and human resources and appropriate supervisiono n state level.
