Resumo: Considering the need to investigate, in school libraries, the subjectanalysis in childrens literature, this dissertation aimed at identifying theprocedures used in the indexing of such literature, concerning technicalreading, identification and the selection of concepts from three literaryworks. The author employed the Verbal Protocol method in order toobtain accounts from four indexers during the process of analysis, whichallowed also the gathering of qualitative information. EmployingPejtersens methodology of indexing, the indexers completed an exercise. The subject analysis made by indexers was compared to theclassification made by the researcher after the reading of nine children, who identified terms and phrases during the reading of the works. Theresults reveal that the indexer of childrens literature attempts to employanalytical procedures similar to those used in the indexing of non-fiction.The literary text requires from the indexer a more subjective kind ofsubject analysis, given the aesthetic quality of the text. This demands, inturn, reading strategies that include: reading the entire text, the ability toidentify style and literary genres, graphic and linguistic features, etc.Pejtersens method, The Dimensions of Fiction, would help to identifythe magic word, or aboutness. The category known as Authors Intentionought to be renamed.
