Resumo: This work aims to evaluate the design compatibilization and the construction waste management as fundamental aspects to the building sustainability. The design compatibilization was analyzed by studying cases where there was the necessity of intervention in different moments: design, construction, preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance. The results suggest that design compatibilization is fundamentally the most secure and the least expensive option. The more time it takes to verify the necessity of intervention, the more people will be involved in the process, the more money will be spent and the more waste will be produced, which proves the necessity of investments during the design step. The construction waste management was studied by comparing conventional mortar and other kinds of mortar, which had their aggregates substituted by blast furnace slag at the proportions of 35, 50and 100%. Tests were run to evaluate the flow rate, the compression strength, and the water absorption by immersion. As for the results, the mortar with 35 and 50% aggregate substitution rate presented satisfactory performance when compared to the conventional mortar. The research proves that the design compatibilization and the reuse of waste on constructions are efficient in reducing the costs and in improving the sustainability of constructions.
