Resumo: The objective of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between the use of information on the competitor within of the organizations and the decision process, on the focus of the organizational sensemaking. Most studies that relateinformation and the decision process is grounded in the rational / positivist approach and have prescriptive models. Monitor the competitor and propose models of organizational use of information is the focus of studies called Competitive Intelligence that also conceive the information as something physical, which is analyzed in order to be transformed into intelligence for theorganizations. The process of organizational sensemaking can be considered an alternativeapproach, based on the premise that organizations construct meanings about what is happening in the form of a process with specific characteristics. It was used qualitative methodology, consistent with the theory used, of multiple case study and critical incident technique. The research context was private higher education, developing case studies in four institutions of the State of Minas Gerais. The results demonstrate the applicability of the theory and the confirmation of the characteristics of the process of organizational sensemaking. An adapted model is presented in the conclusions. Further studies are suggested using the focus of organizational sensemaking, applied in new contexts and for other purposes.
