Resumo: Among critics and readers, Augusto dos Anjos continues to be a poet who causes discomfort due to the characteristics of a scientific vocabulary, endowed with philosophical concepts. This is one of the main traits that illustrate the modernity present in the author's work. In our view, the treatment of his composition, which dialogues with other aesthetics, in its first phase, passing through Parnassianism, Symbolism and even Expressionism, already illustrates the poet's desire to compose poetry, above all, new. This desire is consolidated as the author, through mastery of technique, science and the incorporation of social criticism, in the second and third phases, stands as a witness of a society that - in an improvised and contradictory way - in the end from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th, yearned for the progress of the nation. The refusal or fear of many critics to place the poet in the modern condition was what impelled the conduction of this research. Aiming to contribute to anchoring the poet in modernity, a long historiographic journey on the paths that lead to modernization and how this contributed to a negative assimilation of the poet is our main focus.
