Resumo: This work shows a study about the detection and characterization of electromagnetic transients in voltage and current signals. Focusing on real signals containing short circuited and coming from transmission lines. At the beginning, it approached some theories about the transient identification and justified in the way to choose a filter based on the Z-transform theory, which has some advantages in the computational routine implementation. Afterwards, all the steps involved in the algorithm construction that analyzes the transient events, were described. Highlighting the characterization stage, which divides the analyzed signals into periods and generates a report with these periods main information. Subsequently, preliminary evaluations are performed in some simulated faults cases, in order to test the effectiveness of the computational routine. Then, the practical interest cases were presented and the evaluations of each of them were carried out. The results provide important information about each signal period containing transient and help to understand the behavior of the system from the pre-fault period through the short circuit until its reestablishment. In addition, this report serves as a support to separate more relevant events
