Resumo: The expected effect of medical O3 is the formation of second messengers that trigger a controlled oxidative stress, acting systemically to improve the antioxidant, immune, and circulatory responses. Some of the main administration routes of oxygen-ozone therapy are autohemotherapy and rectal insufflation. One sample from 21 healthy dogs was divided into three groups: minor autohemotherapy/AHm (n=5), minor ozonated autohemotherapy/AHmO3 (n=10) and rectal ozone insufflation/RI (n=6). For each group, hematological, clinical biochemistry (albumin, total proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, transaminases (AST and ALT), alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, urea nitrogen, creatinine, total bilirubin, uric acid, calcium and magnesium) and antioxidant enzymes (GSH-Px and SOD) assays were performed and the results were compared. AHmO3 and RI groups presented changes in hematological parameters and reduction in serum albumin, total proteins and tryglicerides. The AHmO3 group also showed lower concentration of monocytes. The rectal administration of ozone changes more biochemical parameters than ozone-enriched autologous blood application. Autohemotherapy - with or without ozone - and rectal ozone insufflation increase the GSH-Px level. Administration of autologous blood with or without ozone by intramuscular route causes no adverse side effects in healthy dogs.
