Resumo: This work presents the development of power supply and communication systems for a rural distribution line fault detector. For the supply system, energy extraction from the electromagnetic eld produced by the distribution line and the use of photovoltaic modules were studied as alternatives to the employment of a dedicated medium voltage transformer. Electromagnetic problems were modeled byequivalent circuits and evaluated numerically, showing that the proposed solutions were impracticable. As a result, a system composed of photovoltaic modules and one battery bank was sized for supplying the detector. A buck DC/DC converter was designed by taking the energy source characteristics into account, namely the power, which is limited and dependes on the operation point . A control strategy for the converter was proposed aiming the maximization of the power supplied by the photovoltaic modules and the recharge of the battery bank according to a method recommended by the manufacturer. The system's operation was veried numerically. For the communications system, a 1200 bps FSK modem was developed and implemented in a TMS320LF2407 DSP. Its operation was veried numerically and experimentally.
