Resumo: In Traditional Grammars and linguistic works, we find studies that focus on coordination and subordination through a syntactic point of view, remaining within the sentence, what justifies new directions to be taken in order to handle the clauses. The present work aims to emphasizethe importance of looking into the sentences through inferential processes, evidencing, thus, implicit relationships that emerge from the articulation of clauses in speech. The study, therefore, makes use of the Functionalist Theory, as it sees communicative competence notmerely as a process of encoding and decoding expressions, but also as the speakers ability to interpret those expressions when using them. Starting from the Functionalism, the analysis is guided by the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST), and also draws on the relational propositions as presented by Mann and Thompson (1983) who, by discussing thephenomenon of articulation of clauses, intend to verify how texts work in terms of coherence. Here are analyzed the hypotactic enhancement clauses in proverbs, which make up the corpus of the present work. As methodological procedures, a number of twenty proverbs wereselected from various texts from the internet, which had clauses throughout the period, such as: love is like the moon, when it does not increase, it decreases. Next, an analysis of the rhetorical structure of the clauses that compose the proverbs was carried out. It was noticed inthe analyses that the most found rhetorical relations were circumstance, condition, elaboration, contrast and concession, and for these relations to be inferred, the discursive context played an important role. It is believed, then, that a study of enhancing hypotaxis which focus on the rhetorical relationships that emerge from these clauses is important, because it values the social-communicative interaction in order to reveal also the semantic and pragmatic aspects and effects on language outline, not considered as something static, but as a dynamic phenomenon.
