Resumo: This thesis, developed within the scope of the SEGTRAD Project (Cognitive Segmentation in Translation with and without the aid of Translation Memory Systems) and afilitated to researchcarried out at LETRA (Laboratory for Experimentation in Translation), Faculdade de Letras, Federal University of Minas Gerais, investigates the impact of a Translation Memory System (TMS) on the segmentation patterns of 12 professional translators working on the linguistic pairsGerman/Portuguese and English/Portuguese. The research builds on the methodological approach known as triangulation (Jakobsen, 1999; Alves, 2001, 2003) which fosters the use of different yet complementary data elicitation tools. On the one hand, the software Translog was used to investigate professional translators spontaneous segmentation patterns. On the other hand, the software Camtasia was used for collecting process data from the same translators when translations were rendered with the aid of a Translation Memory System (TMS). Drawing on the model for pause analysis developed by Schilperoord (1996) and on the taxonomy for segment categorization proposed by Dragsted (2004), this thesis aims at analyzing the impact of aTranslation Memory System (TMS) in the translation process of professional translators taking into consideration the allocation of time to the phases of the translation process (Jakobsen, 2002; 2003; Alves, 2003; 2005) and analyzing segmentation patterns (Dragsted, 2004) with respect to the type of segments, the size of segments and pauses duration. Results point to the impact of a TMS on the translation process with an increase in the time spent on the initial orientation phaseand a reduction in the time spent on the end-revision phase. Results also point out that the insertion of a TMS has an impact on translators segmentation patterns with segmentation being processed at higher levels, mainly in cross-sentence units, when translations were rendered with the aid of a TMS.
