Resumo: The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate migration in the medium/ intermediate cities of Minas Gerais and its effects on growth and composition by age and sex of the population in the period 1980-2010. Aiming to promote a theoretical reflection and contextualize in time and space the analyzed processes, it was made a brief history of migration and urbanization in Brazil. It was broached, among other issues, the effects of the demographic transition, the main theoretical debates in the migration field and the discussion of the relationship between migration and development. Then, it was presented the criterion for defining medium / intermediate cities used in this study, based on the research "Influence Regions of the Cities 2007" or "REGIC 2007" (IBGE, 2008). Finally, after a conceptual review and the exposition of the methodological procedures, using data from the Demographic Censuses of 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010 and the data related to the question of migrant "fixed date" of the last three censuses (disaggregated by sex and age), it was made a brief analysis of the migrants origin and destination and an evaluation of the migration impacts on population growth and composition by age and sex of the populations of medium / intermediate cities of Minas Gerais.
