Resumo: The present work is an exploratory study that aims to investigate the meanings of tattoos on ghetto young male's bodies, and the possible relationship between these meanings and the construction of masculine identities. Two sources were used on the information gathering: a) 10 interviews with youngsters, men, 18 to 28 years old, residents of poor neighborhoods of Belo Horizonte and Santa Luzia; b) 63 tattoos photographs of the youngsters interviewed. In order to understand and analyze how the masculinity of these young people are expressed, it started from the meanings attributed by them to their tattoos and from the images analysis, using the Content Analysis, being the thematic categories considered using the parameters of the Social Identity Theory. It was concluded for the young interviewed people that being a tattooed young man affirms and can present new possibilities and expectations for their masculine identities mainly in the aspects of work and family. That is even more evident if it is taken into account the society they come from or are inserted as well as their ages and social conditions. Tattooing has therefore proved one of the possibilities of saying who they are, of disagreeing, resisting or simply being free to express on the skin these new answers, to say what they think and what they want for the world they live.
