Resumo: | Thirty children and adolescents (mean age 8.2±4.0 years, range 1-16.5 years) with Chronic Renal Disease (CRD) on Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) for 0.4 to 9.7 years were investigated. The objective was to investigate application of PD technique at home and the determinants of problems; also to check the level of information of the parents about the PD technique and to evaluate the socio-economical conditions and adequacy of the house for the treatment. Associations between thevariables investigated were tested. The parameters: low educational level, low family income, inadequate level of information, inadequate hygiene of hands during PD procedure, mother unemployed, were associated with worse quality of PD technique and higher frequency of peritonitis and hospitalization. For the variables: technique quality versus peritonitis frequency the Odds Ratio (OR) was 1.90 (CI=0.38-9.59) and technique quality versus hospitalization the OR was 1.60 (CI=0.35-7.30). These results didnt find statistic significance despite a tendency tobe significant. Nevertheless, it was possible to verify the presence of important aspects which contribute for the success of PD therapy such as dedication and involvement of the family in patients care, the increased use of Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis (APD), good relationship between patient/family and the health unit, periodic home visits, situations that subsidize actions that could bring a betterquality of life to these children and adolescents. |
