Resumo: Learning through research is mentioned in Brazilian educational guidelines as a privileged methodology to stimulate in the individual the development of skills which lead to lifelong learning. In Information Science this process is called learning by searching and using information. Numerous studies have examined this process, focusing primarily on the actions of the student and the role of the librarian, highlighting the central role of the teacher in guidance for research. In order to insert a new perspective to the literature of the field, this case study was conducted with a History teacher in the second year of high school during the school research, having as guiding model of analysis the Information Search Process of Carol Kuhlthau. For data collection, it was used mainly the method of direct observation and records of daily field under natural learning environment, as well as the interview, characterizing the critical incident technique. It was concluded that the teacher of this research did not use school research as a strategy of searching and using information: learning the content, not the process itself, was the main focus, and the student's behavior while using the information were predominant. However, characteristics of Carol Kuhlthau model emerged in teacher's guidance. One can see that this professional presented a practice aligned to his speech and posture aware of what is constructivism applied to school education, acting in accordance with the guidelines contained in the National Curriculum for History teaching. The conclusion of this study shows that there is a gap to be filled by the dialogue between Education and Information Science that can bring significant improvements to Brazilian education.
