Resumo: The alteration of the physiological nasal breathing pattern is an adaptation of the stomatognathic system to an obstructive or functional factors. It can lead to many structural alterations. The literature review aimed at approaching theoretical subsidies for some topics which are part of this study, as the updating of the mouth breathing concept, its etiologic factors and repercussions for childrens quality of life. It is knownthat the mouth breathing can have several causes: mechanical obstructions, muscleskeletal alterations, bad habits and neurological dysfunctions Thus, the maintenance of this pathological breathing pattern during childhood can lead to countless consequences in the following systems: stomatognathic, muscle-skeletal and respiratory. It can alsolead to alteration of the head position and the body posture as a whole. Moreover, behavior and learning alterations can also be detected in some obstructive cases. Therefore, the mouth breathing children can present several local and systemic disorders that really life quality. Taking into account this diversity of causes and manifestations and aiming at a best treatment for the mouth breathing disorder, the integration of thehealth professionals is very important. The article "The functional capacity of the mouth breathing child assessed by the six minute walk test analyzes the intervening factors that could reflect in the functional capacity of mouth breathing children. Forty-six mouth breathing children of both sexes were examined by a transdisciplinary team. The variables analyzed were: age (months), sex, weight (kg), height (cm), IMC (kg/m2), etiologic factor of the mouth breathing, the breathing muscle strength, lung capacities and postural alterations. The functional capacity was measured by the six minute walk test (6MWT), according to theguidelines established by the ATS. This study has found positive correlation between the distance walked in the 6MWT and the lower spine (p=0,04) in the univariate analysis. The multivariate analysis was significant for the vital capacity (p=0,022), for the alignment angle of the upper (p=0,025) and lower spine (p=0,022), for the angle of the head and left lateral malleolus relation (p=0,049) and the leveling angle of theshoulders (p=0,019). It was, then, concluded that the postural alterations and the vital capacity may influence the functional capacity of mouth breathing children.
