Resumo: Background: The persistence of sites with periodontal disease after treatment with scaling and root planing, which is considered the standard nonsurgical gold treatment in periodontics, triggered the series of studies in the search for an operative treatment for these situations. In Endodontics, irrigation with syringe has been associated with passive ultrasonic irrigation presenting thorough cleaning and antimicrobial efficacy. Whereas the benefit found in endodontic area with the use of this technique, we sought to adapt the ultrasonic irrigation for subgingival use. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the subgingival irrigation with syringe (IS) and / or passive ultrasonic subgingival irrigation (ISUP) with saline (SF), sodium hypochlorite (HS) and propolis extract (PRO) influences the concentration of the inflammatory mediators IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α-induced periodontitis in an experimental rat. Methods: Experimental periodontitis was induced by placement of the bandage in the first molars of 35 Wistar rats. After 14 days, the bandages were removed, and the animals previously scaled, followed by IS in the left hemi-mandible and ISUP in direira, with SF 0.9%, 0.1% and HS PRO 11%. The animals were sacrificed 2 days after treatment and subjected to ELISA to evaluate the levels of cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α. The data were analyzed by the statistical program SPSS Statistics 20 (2011) and the significance level (α) was 5%, that is, were considered significant when p <0.05. Results: The IL-1β increased in a statistically significant way in scraping group (p = 0.015) and reduced the IS group with HS (p = 0.016). The IL-6 reduced the IS groups with SF, HS and PRO compared to scraping group (p = 0.007) and increased in a statistically significant way in ISUP group in relation to IS (p = 0.033). TNF-α and irrigating solutions showed no statistical difference between the groups. Conclusion: The irrigation techniques associated with syringe scraping showed a reduction of the concentration of inflammatory cytokines as compared to treatment only scraping.
