Resumo: Urban afforestation is important for the quality of life in cities and the health of the population. It provides benefits such as climate stability, environmental comfort, improved air quality and reduced noise and visual pollution. Furthermore, it helps to conserve the environment and sequester carbon, a natural process that occurs in trees and helps mitigate climate change, making public policies fundamental to guaranteeing urban afforestation in cities and urban planning must consider them as a important element. Choosing remote sensing as a viable tool to monitor vegetation cover in cities. In addition to being possible to observe a direct correlation between the rate of loss of green areas and carbon emissions in all municipalities on the island, the effect of time frames on the dynamics of these rates as well as a glimpse of the scenario of the most critical activities for the theme within the island, raising an alert for the high rates that São Luís has been presenting since 1986 in comparison to the other three municipalities, making it necessary to reflect on actions such as the planting of species that contribute to environmental comfort and air quality, investment in public policies to increase the vegetation cover of these urban areas.
