Resumo: The present study aims to analyze the novel Os Degraus do Paraíso (1965), by the Brazilian state of Maranhão writer Josué Montello, mainly based on the religious relations between the characters that compose the plot. To do so, we will discuss the relations between literary and religious practice, from theological studies, through the affinity between human societies and religiosity, from the myth to the current religious conflicts. Also highlighting the Maranhão context and the clash between the Christian doctrines present in the literary work. Based on this perspective, authors will be analyzed that deal with the relationship between literature and religion, specifically theology, such as Magalhães (2009) and Manzatto (1994), so that the intrinsic connections between the human societies and the sacred, from Eliade (1992), Domezi (2015), Santos (2004) and Leonel (2010). Finally, we will focus on the construction of the aspects to configure the novel, based on the link between the author's experience and Christian religiosity, besides analyzing the figure of Death, based on Ricoeur (1994, 2005), the construction of city of São Luís as a person to have narrative relevance and the conflicts provoked by the Christian doctrines in the novel.
