Resumo: |
In adolescence, the average recommended sleep time is 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night, and it should be of a quality and quantity determined to maintain a wakeful state during the day. A poor quality of sleep brings an immediate response, and it is possible to observe a drop in the income the next day, in addition to excessive daytime sleepiness, fluctuation in mood, slowness of reasoning, poor school performance and predisposition to accidents. These characteristics can be observed in this transversal study of a quantitative approach carried out with adolescents enrolled in High School in public and private schools in the city of São Luís - Maranhão. The final sample consisted of 1,042 students, who answered the questionnaires with general data from the adolescent, the Pittsburgh questionnaire from Epworth and the Sleep Journal. It was possible to observe that among the adolescents participating in the research, the majority sleep on average 7 hours and 20 minutes (± 0:55) a day, which is considered insufficient for this phase of life. The majority of adolescents classified their sleep as bad and 12.4% had sleep disorders. In addition, 50.1% of adolescents presented excessive daytime sleepiness. It was possible to identify, through this study, a low sleep duration among adolescents, as well as a poor quality of sleep that brings as consequences, the presence of sleep disorders in this phase of life. Thus, actions aimed at the sleep hygiene of adolescents are necessary |
