Resumo: Today's society is marked by large-scale production and consumption of goods and services, which results in high rates of solid waste disposal, especially in urban areas. This study addresses the aspects related to waste disposal in the city of São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão, focusing on the selective collection made through the first 05 Ecopoints, and its importance for environmental sustainability. It considers social, political and environmental issues, especially regarding the public management of solid waste in São Luís, based on the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS), setting up a case study of a qualitative nature with exploratory and descriptive character, using quantitative data. The methodological procedures comprised bibliographic, documentary and field research to apply the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development in their relationship with public management, linking the analysis to the context of selective collection of solid waste. The results show that the initiative of selective collection in São Luís through Ecopoints has presented and has advances, but is still incipient in face of the real needs of the city and the lack of awareness of the population.
