Student republics are spaces of hospitality and formation of individuals who search for a graduation degree. In these venues, becoming a dweller is conditioned to the understanding and assimilation of the university’s tradition and culture. Its creation is linked to the establishment and dissemination of university education. In addition, student accommodations in Brazil have the student housing in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais as a reference. This work pursues to acknowledge student accommodations as spaces for production and dissemination of culture. A live culture which is present in the inhabitants’ daily lives as well as in the cities where they are stablished. Student republics in the city of Lavras/MG were mapped, targeting to understand its territorial distribution as well as to know and analyze the residents’ perception of its importance to the city and the impact that the university student housing has in the formation of the individuals. It was concluded that the student republics can be categorized as cultural spaces as they produce and transmit a live and dynamic culture which not only impacts their inhabitants but also influences the cities in which they are present.
