Resumo: The confinement of dairy cattle is globally well accepted and widespread, especially in cold climate countries, in which thermal control is the main obstacle. This research presents a conjecture for modernizing dairy production systems, encouraging the small producer to aim for better working and production conditions, increasing his self-esteem and promoting greater comfort to the animal. The perfect alignment between the proper dimensioning of the facilities that house the animals and the other facilities define the best productive systems. Therefore, in this work, we aimed at conducting a review of the main confining methods and their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the productive impacts caused by erroneous choices and misconceived projects. We presented the reference free-stall project for a confining system with capacities for 40, 80 or 120 animals, with allusion to better constructive practices. Different constructive techniques were presented and budgeted in basic unit cost per m-2 (BUC m-2 ), generating many information for the analysis of economic variability for the implementation and operation of confining systems. The results showed that the vulnerability to the instability of input sale and purchase prices, especially those of foods, justify the need for implementing sustainable policies that balance financial, environmental and social aspects.
