Resumo: After consecutive rebellions and prison crises, the situation of the Pedrinhas Penitentiary Complex (São Luís Penitentiary Complex in Maranhão) has increased in recent years, so that the institution is on the list of the most dangerous penitentiaries in the world. After face-to-face visits by the Committee of the Organization of American States (OAS) to the site, several human rights violations were found, which represents an impasse in relation to the very notion of citizenship of people in prison situations. Regarding the research objective, we sought to understand the construction of meanings in the discourse about the prison situation from the newspaper O Estado do Maranhão and as specific: a) identify the main characteristics that make up the discourse about Pedrinhas; b) understand the approach to prison issues. With regard to issues of the prison situation in Brazil and violence, we used as a basis the work developed by Conectas Human Rights (2016) and authors such as Mirabete (2008) and Chesnais (1999). Regarding the discourse about prison and its ideological implications, we used, among others, Foucault (2005), Gramsci (1978) and Van Dijk (2010). The corpus of this research is composed of 37 texts from the online edition of the newspaper, in the period 2010, 2014 and 2018 - years with more expressive content. As a methodological approach, we used Discourse Analysis from the modes of operationalization of ideology proposed by Thompson (1990): legitimation, dissimulation, unification, fragmentation and reification. As research results we identified an extensive use of the legitimation and fragmentation modes, mainly due to the intention to hierarchize individuals, trivialize evil and omission for political reasons.
