Resumo: |
In order to investigate the seroepidemiology of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in illicit drug users (DU) in Campo Grande City, Mato Grosso do Sul, 268 individuals were interviewed regarding socio-demographic data and HBV risk factors. After, blood samples were collected and serum samples were tested to HBV markers (HBsAg, anti-HBs e anti-HBc) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The mean age of the drug users was 27.8 years. The majority of them was male (88%), single (60.5), white (75%), and birth in Mato Grosso do Sul (66.8%). Also, 66.3% had low income and schooling (60%). Of the total individuals investigated, 10.1% (95% IC: 6.9 14.5) were positive for the HBV markers, ranging from 9.4% in non injection drug users to 14.7% in injection drug ones. One individual was HBsAg positive; two anti-HBc positive only, and 24 anti-HBc and anti-HBs positive. In 26 individuals only the anti-HBs was detected, suggesting previous hepatitis B vaccination. Further, age of 30 years or more and use of condom irregularly during intercourse were factors independently associated with HBV infection (p<0.05). The findings of this investigation highlight the need of public health programs, mainly regarding the prevention of sexual transmission of HBV and hepatitis B vaccination |
