Resumo: INTRODUCTION: The group practices are used as a strategy of health education and care given to people living with HIV / AIDS (PLWHA). Among the theoretical foundations, we have the prospect of Pichón-Rivière, designated operational group (OG). Moreover, the social interaction permits analysis of concepts Bourdieu. These aspects are relevant for planning and developing the health care of these people. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the group as a form of health care for persons with human immunodeficiency virus in light of Bourdieu. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive qualitative approach in a Civil Society Organization to meet PLWHA through ten meetings GO, weekly, lasting, on average, 1h30min, conducted from August to November 2010, with 14 participants frequently variable. Participants pointed out issues related to living with a diagnosis of HIV / AIDS to other meetings, as well as clarify the operation of the group. The GO were recorded and transcribed, and analyzed material using the technique of content analysis to concepts of Bourdieu. The survey was developed after the study was approved by the Ethics in Medical Research Human and Animal Hospital of the Federal University of Goiás, under protocol No. 029/2009. RESULTS: In this process of analysis of the data set were built four articles for publication in journals recognized in the field of Health Article 1 (Intervention group in meeting the needs of people with HIV / AIDS: an integrative review) revealed the situation of publications international group activities with PLWHA, with evidence of assertiveness of group technology to care for PLWHA. Article 2 (Tool to record group of people with HIV / AIDS: experience report) describes the development of an instrument to record the events in the group, since no such tool to identify generic groups. Article 3 (A person's life pós-HIV/AIDS: habitus and field in light of Bourdieu) relates to the content analysis of the speeches of the group sessions and helped us to know the strength of the group formed to collect data, which is the experience of living with HIV / AIDS. The construction of the experience comes from different sources of knowledge: of their experiences of PLWHA and another person who did not have infection / disease, or those who live with HIV / AIDS. Article 4 (Assessment of operative group for people living with HIV / AIDS) contained a horizontal analysis of the chronicles of the group sessions, the group operated idenficando changes in participants' lives and functioned as a space to host. CONCLUSION: The care group practice is efficient to meet the needs of PLHIV, since the group operated changes in participants' lives, through learning to live with HIV / AIDS. Oe health professionals need to enhance the knowledge of the composition of PLHIV who guide their health practices.
