Resumo: | The textile industry activities represents a major contribution to the environmental contamination of hydrous body, due to the large volume and complexity of the generated effluents, among the pollutants stand out the dyes. Indigo Blue dye is widely used in the textile industry, specifically in the dyeing of jeans and the effluents generated in this process are extremely toxic to the aquatic environment. Due to the difficulty in treating these effluents the need arises for the development and improvement of techniques for their treatment, highlighting the electrochemical processes as a promising technique. Electrochemical reactors generate in situ coagulants from the application of electric current to metallic electrodes. Its application is highlighted due to its good efficiency in the treatment of various types of effluents, underlines its economic viability, easy operation and requires small areas of occupation. In addition, two types of materials were used as metal electrodes, one is characterized as a foundry waste, known as iron slag, which would have the final destination in industrial landfill, thus reducing its disposal in the environment. The other scrap of iron, material discarded in the process of cutting metal parts and that will be melted and reused in new parts. Therefore, the objective of this project is to evaluate the potential use of iron slag and iron scrap as electrodes in the electrochemical process aimed at the treatment of textile industry effluents for dye removal. The experiments were conducted in an electrochemical reactor equipped with metal electrodes, connected to a direct current power supply. To analyze the efficiency of the electrochemical process, before and after treatment, the parameters of color, pH, electrical conductivity, sludge generation, electrode wear, phenol removal, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon were analyzed. (TOC). Results were obtained with the use of iron slag in the synthetic effluent average removal of 95 % color and 100 % phenol, and in the textile effluent 80 % color, 91 % turbidity, 100 % phenol, 65 % TOC and 49 % COD. On the other hand, the use of iron scrap in the synthetic effluent removes an average of 95 % color, 95 % phenol, in the textile effluent 92 % color, 97 % turbidity, 100 % phenol, 65 % COT and 49 % COD. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the process in the removal of pollutants, thus demonstrating the potential use of iron slag and scrap as electrodes in the electroflocculation process. |
