Resumo: This work was based on the experience of social participation in municipal public management, based on the case of the municipality of Mato Queimado, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, and based on the analysis of public management experience with the participation of society, in the implementation and monitoring of government actions of public managers. This study aims to understand the process of social participation in public management in the municipality of Mato Queimado, Rio Grande do Sul, in the light of social management; thus using the qualitative, interpretative and phenomenological methodological approach to understand the research problem. As a research method, it made use of bibliographical research, with the aid of systematic integrative revision and, later, the interpretative and phenomenological method, to analyze data collected through in-depth interviews with municipal managers and community members. The results show that in the municipality of Mato Queimado the Social Management iscombined with the Managerial model, there is effective participation of the residents, demonstrating that Social Management is effective, while the interviewees assure that the commitment with results and seriousness in the treatment of public resources is remarkable, we note the precepts of Managerialism. It was possible to stratify how the participation of the society occurs in the management of the municipality, to understand how it happens the choice of the members of the elective positions, as well as the representativeness of the civil society in the municipal councils.
