Resumo: At the current moment, the studies of the language emphasize the relations between grammar and discourse. According to this tendency, based on the North American linguistic functionalism, represented by Givón, Thompson, Closs-Traugott, Hopper, among others, this work aims to collect and analyze the motivation of the grammatical structure of the Portuguese language, traditionally named as synthetical passive voice (VPS) which is available in the grammatical system to represent a process where the patient is mentioned and the agent is faded. This structure is used to advertise products and services on the streets of Niterói, downtown. It is a simple, expected construction, whose more natural grammar structure disposition, or a less marked one, has the configuration of VERB + SE + SN, having the verb the topic status attribution. The purpose or means of the action is shown through the verb and performed by a physical or juridical person. Such structure meets the needs of communicative purposes of the linguistics community and probably signals for a potential change in the articulation rule of VPS, as well as it confirms that the syntactic structures reflect somehow the form and the organization of the underlying semantic-cognitive structures. However, it lacked a farther study of observing and analyzing this structure in itself or in its context of use, keeping a distance from the user. This study aims, therefore, taking into account the way these texts are produced, the general beliefs, their producers' background, the accomplishment or not of their final objective. Besides collecting the data (attachment), interviews with the users of this grammar structure were done, as well as with its receivers (customers), in order to add information to corroborate or modify the previous studies. The results of this survey showed some indications that VPS suffers a routinely process that has turned it into a ritualized and conventionalized construction, representative of the street advertising, therefore, making part of the collective imaginary of these informers. In summary, it was verified that, if a grammatical structure is frequently used in certain communicative situation, that is due to the(s) meaning(s) that it articulates. At the same time, the repetition of its use is what, historical and socially, creates and consolidates its meaning.
