Resumo: | In this work, it is proposed an extension of the lossy compression algorithm known as Multidimensional Multiscale Parser (MMP). This new version, called 3D-MMP, allows the MMP algorithm to effciently compress three-dimensional sources of data. Also, a new segmentation rule, which can be used with all versions of MMP, that enhances significantly the rate-distortion performance of the algorithm is presented. The algorithms were implemented in computer programs, using the object-oriented C++ programing language, and used to compress three-dimensional data from weather radars of the Brasilian Air Force. The rate distortion performance results obtained were very good, with 3D-MMP outperforming state-of-the-art encoders, such as H.264 and JPEG 2000. Two dimensional versions of MMP, using the new enhanced segmentation, were also implemented and used to compress two-dimensional gray scale image data. The results show that the MMP algorithm, with the new segmentation proposed outperforms, the original version of MMP. |
