Resumo: Butt and fillet welds are usually used in the design of structural elements. Since heat is used in the welding operation, there is a possibility of metallurgical changes in the parent metal in the vicinity of the weld. Also, residual stresses may be introduced in the process. Besides, weldments in corrosive environments may, over a period of time, develop serious cracks. The present work is concerned with the study of the alternative use of bonded joints in the place of welded joints. The use of epoxy as adhesive in metallic joints may be, in certain circumstances, a good alternative for designers. For instance, aluminium joints have good resistance to corrosion but the welding process is not simple. Bonding can also be a good alternative to welding at facilities for offshore oil fields exploitation (platforms, FPSO, FSO, etc.), specially after the development of structural adhesives. The present paper is a first step to propose a model, as simple as possible, to evaluate the strength of butt and lap bonded joints. Experimental data for the rupture strength of lap and but joints are presented and so is an analysis based of Von Mises Fracture Criteria for welded joints using the experimental data. Besides, it is discussed in which level of strain the use of bonding may be interesting both from the structural and economical point of view.
