Resumo: Because child labor involves multiple stakeholders, we need to stimulate collaboration and communication from all different sectors of the society in order to promote safe and healthy work experiences for children. As a safety' s engineering contribution, this dissertation has as objective to discuss a new methodology to establish, apply and check the performance of the customized pilot training program involving elementary students, ITom the fifth to eighth grades, ofthe metropolitan area ofRio de Janeiro in order to expand their perceptions ofrisks. In this way, research was structured. As a first step, we created three questionnaires related respectively with perc~ptions of thirty-one environrnental risks; children's occupational conditions and safety' s knowledge and skills. This step allowed the second one when these questionnaires were applied, immediately after the teacher' s customization and validation. After the data analyses we could create the children's condition diagnose which involved occupations; perceptions of risks and leveI of understanding of safety' s engineering. Close to one-half of all students were engaged in economic and non-economic activities on a part-time job. Also more girls than boys perform part-time housework in their own parents' household. From this point oil, we could establish the pilot training program perfectly customized to this population and with the teacher's validation. Finally, the pilot program was applied and evaluated. The results showed a significant evolution in each item evaluated as well as concluded that this kind of customized training program must be applied to our students within the atmosphere of the elementary schools in order to develop as soon as possible the practice of safe acts guaranteeing safety conscious adults contributing with the cultural evolution and social transformation of our country. In synthesis we are sure that the wealth of information contained in this dissertation on the situation of child labor will contribute to understanding and allow us to face the challenges that lie ahead.
