Risk management aims to reduce the probability and / or impact of a potentially harmful activity to the success of a particular project. The need to manage them principally results from the conscience and the existence of factors, internal or external to the project, whose triggering, throughout its lifecycle, can be subject to unexpected changes in their determinants of cost, schedule and / or operational performance. By its capital intensity and high uncertainty, both known intrinsic segment designs of the heavy civil construction industry in Brazil still lack of studies on the effectiveness and intensity of use of practices and risk management in projects. Therefore, the present research , exploratory in nature , want to accomplish from a literature review , a survey followed by an analysis that aims to identify the use of risk management practices in projects of a sample of micro, small , medium , medium - large and large companies in the heavy construction industry in the State of Rio de Janeiro .
