Resumo: The present work was developed under the environmental perspective and it was focused on the concepts of sustainable development, sustainability and exergy and the use of these concepts in actual issues related to global environment. T he motivation for this work was not only an effort to enlarge the knowledge about exergy property but mainly about its application in environmental areas of interest, which differs from the purely technical area of engineering analysis. Being aware of the potential of the Science Direct bibliographic database, which can be found online at Petrobras, was considered promising. It was also considered promising to count on a revisionist approach about the actual debate around sustainable development, sustainability and exergy, even if it is preliminary. This approach will enable a future deeper research in this area and it may attract other researchers´ interest. It was considered as the main objective of the work to identify qualitative relations or quantitative relations between exergy and sustainable development and/or exergy and sustainability. More precisely, it was important to identify indicators based on exergy and postulated to observe or measure the sustainable development or the sustainability. Moreover, a connection between the methodologies based on exergy with management, mainly with environmental management was tried to be identified. O ne can conclude, based on the literature reviewed, that there is a qualitative relation between exergy and sustainable development and between exergy and sustainability of processes and/or systems. Although this relation is a subject of discussions, it has not been quantitatively specified yet. In addition, it was observed that there is a relation between exergy and management, especially between exergy and environmental management, with several proposed indicators that use exergy as the base for the measurement of sustainability of processes and/or systems.
