Resumo: | In the XXI century the newspaper Gazeta Mercantil, founded in 1920, faces a financial crisis that threatens its survival in the Brazilian press industry. The economic stagnation scenario and the cuts in advertisements affected the communication industry in Brazil and abroad. Gazeta Mercantil S/A, as part of this context, suffered this impact. In 2000, a new daily newspaper - Valor Econômico is launched to compete directly for the same public targeted by Gazeta, which had been, so far, the only national newspaper focusing on economy and business in the country. But its vulnerability process was also intensified by other factors. This paper analyses mainly this period in the recent history of Gazeta Mercantil (2000-2003) and tries to explain the reasons for the crisis, which presents specifications that go beyond those related to the means of communication in general. This would be, besides a financial crisis, a symbolic crisis. |
