Resumo: The new technology can optimize the education of the Pathology, to stimulate the student to take an active role in the acquisition of his/her proper knowledge, being establishing an interaction with sights to a more efficient learning. The work has as objective: to know the profile of the target population, the level of knowledge and cultural-cognitive use in relation to software applications such as Word, PowerPoint, ToolBook and Director, to identify the purpose of the use of these tools, to quantify and point out resources and medias used in software, to identify advantages and disadvantages, as tools for support and development of an instructional Compact-Disc Read-Only Memory, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, aiming at taking care of the difficulties identified in the studied population. The research carried through a qualitative and quantitative study, of which 367 students of six Universities participated, answering an anonymous questionnaire, with 31 questions, addressing the considered objectives. For evaluation of the software best known by the students, a pointer of proficiency was idealized, based on score system, and it was attributed to each student in each program. The results showed that the sample, in its majority, is composed of the female gender, single, without children, full-time students, currently in the 3rd and 4th periods, between 18 and 21 years old. With relation to the socio-economic-cultural profile, in its majority the students do not work (84,38%), belong to a family with good acquisition power, and daily informed, through television (81,84%) and radio (53,35%). In average, the proficiency pointer was 0.51 [ ±0,007 ] for Word, 0,46 [ ±0,010 ] for PowerPoint, 0.01 [ ±0,003 ] for ToolBook and 0,02 [ ±0,003 ] for Director. One concludes that the majority of the studied sample better uses Word than PowerPoint, and is unaware of software like ToolBook and Director. Word for presenting greater penetration between graduation students in Odontology is probably indicated in the production of content for distance learning of Pathology; in physical presence learning PowerPoint software could be used in an adjusted form. To know the user is an indispensable factor in the choice of a software tool with the purpose of delivering learning. The set of gotten answers suggests the possibility of a Compact-Disc Read-Only Memory to be a very useful tool to assist the process of actual learning in person or at a distance. We believe that there is still a lot left over to study and explore
