This work aims at investigating virtual interactions and social enviroments in the cyberspace. Looking at the interational dynamics of ICQ and IRC, two programs that support synchronous text-based communication, we discuss some social and communicative aspects of computer mediated communications technology. Taking into consideration their interface and graphical design we analyse how those systems provide mechanisms to built different ways of interaction, contexts and social formations. In the same way, through those distinct programs we observe how people develop and elabore identity, public sphere and free speech in the cyberspace. After all we examine if every social aggregations that emerge from the Internet can be considerated as virtual communities.
