Resumo: The present study aimed to examine, from the perspective of technical-administrative staff of Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca, if the theory proposed by Frederick Herzberg can, even after more than 50 years of existence, help to understand the elements that make the individual more prone or not to motivation. Herzberg's theory distinguishes two groups of factors that influence the individual in different ways, one being the hygienic factors, which are related to the conditions of work itself, and the other the motivational factors, related to the development of the activity, which produce motivation. The proposed methodological approaches are based on a qualiquantitative study, by using exploratory research methods, and bibliographic research and the case study as a means of investigation. In the study, were analyzed which factors proposed by the theory are present in CEFET/RJ, distinguishing those that, according to Herzberg's classification, are said to be "motivational" or "hygienic". Therefore, as a result, was observed the presence of the factors "interpersonal relationship", "safety" and "responsibility", the first two being classified as hygienic. The results analysis supports, in part, the proposed theory, because, according to the researched servers, almost all of the factors that are most valued were the so-called "motivational" factors, except for the "promotion" factor which has not had much influence in the motivation of the respondents. Moreover, the "interpersonal relationship" factor - classified as a hygienic factor - was seen as a motivating factor in CEFET/RJ, a fact that contradicts Herzberg's theory. However, it was observed that the theory's classification can help CEFET/RJ's managers to create tools for the improve of the organizational climate and for the implementation of a Strategic People Management with a motivational approach, seeking continuous development of quality and productivity of the services provided by the servers.
