This dissertation deals with the idea of loneliness in Lygia Fagundes Telles shor t stories, aiming to demonstrate how the awakening to individual loneliness contributed to the construction of a literary trend, which would survive throughout Modernism. In this perspective, we visit the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, to bring to fore some possible positive aspects of loneliness as observed by the precursor of interior writing in French literature and thought. Also, we considered the ambiguity that such a felling may have in Lygia s oeuvre, as it shows an almost obsession by Time s corroding character. Through memory, Lygia emphasizes both the negative and the possible renovation of the self.
