This work tends to understand some intellectual inflections on national identity, bore froµ Brazilian folklore and history during the first decade of 20th century. These two aspects were brought to the foreground by implying evaluations of black and mixed-race people s role in the history and culture which were being constructed as national then. Under impact of the end of slavery and the establishment of republic system, those evaluations also signified the consideration of mixture of races itself on the national formation. Our emphasis is to analyze articles, chronics, reports and short stories published on Almanaque Brasileiro Garnier (1903-1914) and Revista Kosmos (1904-1909).
