Resumo: Contemporaneously, the Higher Education Institutions (IES) began to engage with the context in which they operate, trying to cope with the emerging social demands. In this social setting which imposes new requirements, the assessment established by the Higher Education National Assessment System tries to ensure, besides the improvement of the quality of Higher Education, the definition of its priorities, guidance for expansion of its academic provision and effectiveness related to Social Responsibility. This study aims to analysing the dimension of Social Responsibility in the process of self-evaluation of Higher Education Institutions from the perspective of (SINAES). The study aims at indentifying if the indicators of Social Responsibility are being met by the Unit of Decentralized Education of Nova Friburgo wich integrates CEFET/RJ. In order to do so, the general guidelines for self-assessment of IES script prepared by the National Commission for Higher Education Evaluation and Final Report and Self-Assessment CEFET/RJ will be considered. For the realization of this study, the concepts of social responsibility were considered as well as the mission of the IES and rules assigned by SINAES for such dimension. Moreover, CEFET/RJ internal documents were analysed such as; self-assessment final report (2013) and Institutional Development Plan (2010). During the case study a questionnaire was applied considering the need to assess the degree of usage and importance of the activities, actions, relationships and social policies done by UNED Nova Friburgo. As a result of this study it was possible to diagnose the involvement of the Unit, with regard to the dimension of Social Responsibility, from the indicators of SINAES and Self-Assessment Final Report, as well as to identify the weaknesses and strengths of the institution, considering the subsidy of possible decisions regarding its future management.
