Resumo: | The use of pesticides has made an impact on human health and the environment that merits the attention of the scientific community. Laws are passed to ensure the commitment and social responsibility of companies, and meetings are organized to discuss the integration of society and environment, but the unsustainable paradigm of economic development is not overcome. The use of pesticides in Nova Friburgo is huge and it is believed that lack of a more effective policy of inspection, control and assistance, of adequate technical consultation, plus low levels of schooling, little awareness of the proper method of use and disposal of toxic waste and the danger of continued exposure are to blame for this. The purpose of this research is to study the work process in floriculture, prioritizing its organization and its relationship to occupational hazards and the disorderly use of pesticides, verify damage to the environment and agricultural workers health, and promote better working conditions plus health and environmental instruction. After case studying a family of floricultural workers, it was deemed necessary to implement educational campaigns that consider the rural workers´ level of perception of their activities, and measures such as: continued education for workers, meetings and lectures to promote awareness in the general population, monitoring of pesticide waste, risk evaluation studies, registration process of pesticides, among others, could be proposed. As long as this is not considered a priority of government and society, the situation tends to worsen, since a set of unidirectional interventions is necessary. If we observe the relationship of research and development there is unbalance. Research is abundant, according to workers statements, and reasonable quality is shown. But development is slow and inadequate. Actually, research is easier than development and because of this much research is done and not much converted into practical results. There is enormous potential for transforming research into development and this should be our weapon to, through dialogue, answer the wants and needs of these workers. |
