This doctoral thesis, presents a comparative study between the poetic productions of Cesário Verde and Cruz e Sousa, in his tragic side, in the light of a critical-theoretical approach. Established parallels between literary projects, with fulcrum on the analysis of a set of poems, identified by an ideological confrontation and aesthetic, from the incorporation of similar strategies and across dissimilar that poets use to deal with the challenges of historical and social circumstances, present at the end of the 19TH century. A part of this study demonstrates how the poets break with traditions, to make use of an innovative writing, based on themes and language transgressors, especially in light of the conflicts, contradictions and ambiguities of a society that is, almost always, apart of them, and even feel bricked up and shifted. Analyzes how the poets, given this state of affairs, defy the forces of the universe and of history, are suffering, but also resistant to these same forces, although these cannot be fully understood or overcome by rational prudence.
