The main purpose of this dissertation is to propose a set of sustainability indicators for the industry of petroleum retail. The need for this proposition comes from a market demand. Enterprises have been increasingly seeing themselves in a position where they need to make use of sustainability indicators in the three dimensions it defines, environmental, economic and social, in order to reduce the negative impact of their activities and better their relationship with stakeholders. The sustainability concept, both global and on a business level, is presented and a list of frameworks studied, in order to develop a conceptual overview. The research looked at the oil sector activities, it s impacts on the three dimensions and the sustainability indicators reported by some major companies, examining the retail in depth, through a case study of Petrobras Distribuidora S. A. It also developed a methodology to enable the selection of the indicators, where a pre-selected number of currently used sustainability indicators is checked against two filters. The first one is based on key principles for the creation of sustainable value and the second on conceptual requirements of a good indicator. The result is a set of tools that can be used for the retail sector of the oil business.
