Resumo: The aim of this study is to analyze how relationship management based on Agenda 21 can contribute to promoting sustainable relations between companies and communities. Within the present context in which sustainability stands out as a key issue in organizational performance, it is essential for companies to adopt new management standards, particularly in terms of stakeholder relationship management, to face the challenge of achieving ever-higher levels of competitiveness, productivity and social legitimacy in their operations. Accordingly, Agenda 21, as it incorporates principles such as partnership, consensus, cooperation and multi-institutionality, is an instrument that may be adopted by companies in their relationship management to establish transparent, l asting relations. In order to investigate this assumption, the case study method was used to analyze the Petrobras Agenda 21 Program. The literature was reviewed and data collected from it, in order to present the definition of sustainable relations, identify the dominant factors involved in building sustainable relations between companies and communities, analyze the potential of Agenda 21 in contributing to this process, and build a diagnosis of relationship management based on Agenda 21. The themes investigated were corporate social responsibility, stakeholder theory, community relationship management focusing on the issues of social capital, community resilience and sustainable societies and Agenda 21. The study is classified as applied, exploratory and qualitative, and was be carried out by means of bibliographical, document, field research anda case study method. Its development has confirmed the proposition that Agenda 21, when adopted as an instrument for managing relationships between a company and community, contributes to promoting sustainable relations, generating opportunities for mutual benefit. Ultimately, the case study presented the factors required for companies to introduce Agenda 21 in their community relations management process
