This present study researched and anaiyzed the stevedoring historical evolution and the facts that shaped the stevedoring culture, the 8630/93 iaw and its representative quaiity as the starting point of the organizational deep change which affected ali free port workers of the nationai port system at the end of the twentieth century; it investigated the present-day working conditions with an emphasis on occupational health and safety, dealing with ergonomics issues. Based on the stevedores case study of the Rio de Janeiro port, this research identified and evaiuated the main settings and agents which interfere with the working-Iife quality of those stevedores. This study resulted in subsidizing and stimulating the improvement in the stevedores working-Iife quality a very important link in the consolidation chain of the sustainable deveiopment of the Rio de Janeiro port.
