Resumo: Civil engineering is arguably one of the national industry segments responsible for high indices of working hazards, in their majority of a severe nature, resulting in incapacitating of fatal damage. This fact, in the great picture, comes from the unsafe working conditions, the degraded production mode, from inefficient safety policies, improvisation on working places, from scarce investment in personal or collective protection gear. Among other factors, they inflate in an important way those already highly elevated indices of accidents. The present research explores aspects of work safety in working places on the campus of Fiocruz, Rio de Janeiro, from a case study backed up on information gathering during 2007 from eight subcontracted firms of construction acting at the institution, having been facilitated by the academic and professional experience of the author, by the contribution of a group of technicians and interns, and by the backup of the campus administration direction (DIRAC). As to the technology employed, this research has a qualitative and exploratory character about secondary data, having been essentially developed from the analysis of the working environment and from the use of multiple resources of evidence. The following conclusions can be pinpointed: the proactive and preventive actions in the field of the workers‟ safety and health came mainly from bigger firms; medium and smaller firms tend to limit themselves to obliging to the law of the Work Department (MT); firms that have been following quality and security policies evince some more clear betterments in their work relationships, with a greater involvement of the workers in their activity and production, a greater sense of collectivism and companionship; the greater strength of subcontracting is still a difficult matter when things like working group qualification, workers‟ turnover and working conditions are considered. The gathered data command a greater attention to the field of civil engineering, especially on planning and working models of management based on more recent approaches and effectively centered on the worker‟s health and safety.
