Resumo: The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the process of appropriation of the territory in Vitória`s city (ES) by capoeira groups. The intention is to find evidence on the aspects that this practice can reveal or not regarding the dimension of cultural identity and citizenship. Based on this objective, we developed the research on three specific objectives, namely: We search to understand the aspects that constituted the history of capoeira, we realized a bibliographic review of the Geography on the subject and we investigate the oral reports of the masters and the teachers with regard to the relationship established between capoeira, appropriation of the territory, the consolidation of cultural identity and the expansion of citizenship. At methodology, we conducted a participant research, using the qualitative method. To understand the aspects of capoeira experienced In Vitória´s city, we used participant observation, which was systematized in field diaries, iconographic records and oral reports, made through the interview. In this way, we directed the interview to those who exercised the leadership, that is are, the capoeira masters. This decision was made because we considered this individual as the catalyst for opinions within the group. In general terms, the teacher is one who, in a limited process of feedback with his disciples, forms and informs the group's ideology. The questions raised, during the interview,it has to dialogue with the concepts worked during the research, such as: territory, identity and citizenship. As a result, we verified that the values transmitted in capoeira act as fomentadores of the cultural identity and the consolidation of the citizenship.
